Summer Ends, Alternative Transportation Begins!

As summer winds down and we gear up for the school year, take this change in your routine as an opportunity to inventory your transportation patterns and improve them! How often do you carpool? Ride the Bus? Bike? Take the next two weeks to keep a transportation log and see where you can be more efficient, then implement those changes now. If you are not ready to give up your car, try going without only two days each week.

Did you know that for every gallon of gasoline saved, 20 pounds of carbon dioxide are kept out of the atmosphere? If you reduce your gasoline usage by 2 gallons every week, you will save almost one metric ton of carbon dioxide per year and keep about $400 dollars in saved gas costs in your wallet! Incorporate some of the following to make that reduction:

Madison has a wonderful ride share program where you create an account and are matched up for carpools or vanpools.

Does the idea of leaving your car at home while you are at work seem scary to you? There are many “Guaranteed ride home programs if an emergency arises, and Community Car’s 4 new locations are available for mid-day errands! If you don’t see a car near your ideal location, let them know where their next car location should be.

Are you intimidated by Madison Metro’s bus-bike racks? No longer! Click here for step by step instructions and a how to video.

There are at least 2 good months left of “bike friendly” weather for those of us without studded tires. Check out tips on how to successfully commute to work with the Bicycle Commuter Guide.
