February 2010 eMail Update

Volunteer for Sustain Dane at Brat Fest - the first and only Sustainability non-profit working our favorite Memorial Day Event!

Sustain Dane is thrilled to join the community groups that work Brat Fest - but we need your help to ensure a strong turn out. We want to prove that a constituency exists for issues around sustainability, and until this year no group that works for sustainability has been represented at Brat Fest.

Additionally, for every hour you volunteer, $8 goes to Sustain Dane - supporting all the work we do to create communities that deeply care for and are sustained by their unique environment.

There are many volunteer possibilities- from cashier to sparkle patrol! During Brat Fest- Friday, May 28th to Monday, May 31st - volunteer shifts are 3 hours long. There are also 8 hour set up and take down shifts the days before and after the festivities.
If you are interested in being contacted with more details around this great opportunity, please contact the Mpower Coordinator

Missed "Scouting for Residential Energy Savings" Webinar?

If you are like most, you have 25-35 electronic gadgets plugged in at your house - everything from cell phone chargers and alarm clocks to home theater. And this accounts for about 20% of your total electrical use! Ready to go around unplugging? Before you do, find out which devices have the most opportunity for savings. Watch Scouting for Residential Energy Savings now.

Don't have time to watch?

The #1 action item in ease and impact is to ensure your CPU, and not just your monitor, are powered down when not in use - either manually or through easy management software. It may even be as simple as changing a systems setting.

Also, visit the Madison Public Library and check out a  Watts up Meter and find out which of your electronics that are in "stand by" waste the most electricity. Plug them into a power strip to easily turn them on and off.

UW Small Business Development Center presents: Show me the Green - Green Practices for Small Businesses Workshop

These days, the word "green" shows up almost everywhere. But what does it mean to everyday commerce? Which products and services make sense for your customers and employees, and why?

How do all these issues fit together? Customer service. Local knowledge. Understanding the market. Environmental science. Energy conservation. Ethics. Profit. Benchmarks. Managing costs. Tools for collaboration and competition.

With rapidly rising utility bills and transportation costs, new government regulations and tax incentives, now is the time to find out.
